Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Actually Need

The ultimate first-time mom's guide to newborn must-haves, baby registry essentials, and the things you'll actually use during those first few months.

If you're pregnant and currently have 47 tabs open trying to figure out what you actually need for a newborn, this one's for you.

Spoiler alert: You do not need nearly as much baby stuff as the internet wants you to believe.

After going through the newborn stage myself, I have a much better understanding of which baby essentials are genuinely helpful, which products are worth investing in, and which things you can absolutely wait to buy.

So I put together my own newborn essentials checklist, filled with the products I used, loved, or would choose if I were bringing a baby home all over again.

No unnecessary gadgets. No 200-item shopping list. Just thoughtful baby essentials to make those first few weeks a little easier.

1. Newborn Clothing Essentials: Keep It Simple (And Easy to Change)

Let's start with one of the most exciting parts of preparing for a baby: the tiny clothes.

Is there anything cuter than a newborn outfit? Probably not.

But here's something I learned pretty quickly: when you're changing diapers around the clock, practicality becomes a lot more important than how adorable an outfit looks.

Two-Way Zippered Onesies

2. Swaddles, Baby Blankets & Wraps: All the Cozy Newborn Essentials

There is something so special about those first few weeks when your baby is tiny enough to curl up against your chest.

This is one category where I love having a few beautiful, functional pieces that can be used in different ways.

3. Newborn Sleep Essentials: What You Actually Need for Baby's First Nights Home

Before having a baby, I spent so much time thinking about the nursery.

The furniture, the colors, the little decorative details.

And then you bring your newborn home and realize that what matters most is having a safe, convenient place for them to sleep.

4. Diaper Changing Essentials: The Products You'll Use All Day, Every Day

I don't think anyone fully prepares you for how many diapers you'll change during the newborn stage.

Let's just say you'll become very familiar with your changing station.

The good news? You really only need a few reliable products to make diaper changes easier.

5. Burp Cloths & Everyday Baby Cleanup: The Unsung Heroes

If there's one category of newborn products I underestimated, it's burp cloths.

You think you need a few.

Then you discover that babies have a talent for making a mess approximately five seconds after you've changed their clothes.

6. Baby Bottles & Feeding Essentials: What You Need Before Baby Arrives

Feeding is one of the biggest parts of newborn life, and it's also one of the categories where I think parents can easily overspend.

There are so many bottle systems, sterilizers, drying racks, and accessories marketed as absolute necessities.

But what you actually need depends on whether you're breastfeeding, formula feeding, pumping, or combining different feeding methods.

7. Breastfeeding & Pumping Essentials: What I Would Have Ready for Mom

Let's talk about the part of the newborn checklist that sometimes gets overlooked: everything Mom needs.

Whether you plan to breastfeed, pump, combination feed, or formula feed, the postpartum period comes with a lot of adjustments.

These are the breastfeeding and pumping products I found worth considering.

Breast Milk Storage Bags

Reusable Nursing Pads

Nursing Soothing Cups

Nipple Balm

A Manual Breast Pump

8. Newborn Bath Time Essentials: Simple, Gentle & Stress-Free

Giving your newborn their first bath can feel slightly intimidating.

They're tiny. They're slippery. And suddenly you're questioning whether you've ever held a baby correctly in your life.

Thankfully, you don't need an elaborate baby bath setup.

Baby Bathtub or Bath Support

Baby Shampoo and Moisturizer

9. Newborn Pacifiers & Soothing Essentials: Every Baby Is Different

Before becoming a mom, I assumed you could simply choose a pacifier and your baby would use it.

Turns out, babies have opinions.

Strong opinions.

And sometimes those opinions involve rejecting the beautifully designed pacifiers you carefully selected.

10. What You Actually Need Before Bringing a Newborn Home

After going through all these categories, I want to emphasize something important.

You do not need every baby product purchased, organized, and perfectly displayed before your due date.

There are things you'll use immediately, things you'll grow into, and things you might never need depending on your baby and your feeding routine.

For the first few days at home, I would prioritize having:

  • A safe bassinet or crib with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheets

  • Comfortable newborn sleepers and booties

  • Age-appropriate swaddles or wearable sleep sacks

  • Newborn diapers, wipes, and a changing area

  • Plenty of burp cloths

  • Bottles and feeding supplies appropriate for your feeding plan

  • A few basic postpartum and breastfeeding essentials, if applicable

  • Gentle baby wash, washcloths, and towels

  • A properly installed, rear-facing infant car seat for the ride home

Then, as you settle into life with your baby, you can figure out what else you genuinely need.

That's the beauty of taking a more intentional approach to your baby registry.

You're not buying products just because they're popular. You're choosing things that will make your family's everyday life easier.

A Little Reminder Before Baby Arrives

If you're preparing to bring your first baby home, I hope this guide makes the process feel a little less overwhelming.

It's so easy to get caught up in finding the perfect baby products, organizing the nursery, and making sure you haven't forgotten anything.

I remember how much thought went into every little decision.

But here's what I wish every expecting mom knew: you don't need to have everything figured out before your baby arrives.

I've gathered all of my newborn essentials, from baby clothes and swaddles to feeding supplies and bath time favorites, in my Everything You Need to Bring a Baby Home collection on Jane Curates.

Whether you're building your first baby registry, shopping for an expecting friend, or counting down the days until you meet your little one, I hope you find something here that makes this exciting new chapter a little easier.

And remember, the most important thing you're bringing home isn't in a shopping cart.

It's your baby.

Everything else, you'll figure out together.

With love, Jane
